CalcNorth

About

Smart calculations. Confident decisions.

CalcNorth started with a simple question: why is it so hard for Canadians to get clear answers about their money?

Built in Canada, CalcNorth began as a personal project, an attempt to make sense of everyday financial decisions. From managing debt and understanding credit to navigating loans and mortgages, the goal was always the same: to move closer to financial freedom, one clear number at a time.

Along the way it became clear that the financial tools available online are mostly built for US systems, with different rules and assumptions that don’t quite reflect Canadian reality. CalcNorth exists to fill that gap.

Every calculator is built with Canadian details in mind. Every guide is written to be clear, practical, and actually useful. And every line of code, every explanation, and every source is carefully reviewed before it goes live, because when it comes to your money, accuracy isn’t optional.

Plain language. Cited sources. Math you can verify.

How we keep the math honest

  • Verified against authoritative sources.Every calculator’s math is matched against the issuing institution (Financial Consumer Agency of Canada, CMHC, OSFI, Bank of Canada, CRA, provincial revenue authorities). Where we encode a rule, we link to its source in the page’s sources block.
  • Unit-tested.Over 100 automated tests check the calculations against reference scenarios. Tests run on every code change; if the math doesn’t match, the page doesn’t go live.
  • Live data where it matters. Bank of Canada rates (overnight, prime, 5-year GoC bond yield) are pulled directly from the Bank of Canada Valet API and refreshed every 24 hours. No middlemen, no stale numbers.
  • Shown work.Every calculator’s page includes a methodology section that describes exactly what the calculator does, plus step-by-step math callouts in the long-form guide so you can verify any number we publish.

What we don’t do

CalcNorth doesn’t collect or store the numbers you type into the calculators. They run entirely in your browser; nothing about your scenario reaches our servers. We don’t maintain user accounts, sell your data, or place behavioural ads. The technical details of what is and isn’t collected are in our Privacy Policy.

We also don’t give financial advice. Calculator outputs are estimates based on your inputs and the public rules we encode. They should not substitute for advice from a licensed professional in your province. Our Terms of Service spell out the legal scope.
